COMMENT: The Sunday Times from 12.12.21 had an item on p15: "Faded white lines could thwart drive for autonomous cars". It is behind a pay wall (www.thetimes.co.uk/article/faded-white-lines-could-thwart-drive-for-autonomous-cars-gk2t0wcm3) but it says: "Britain’s roads often don’t have markings or when they do they are faded." Matthew Avery, director of research at Thatcham [news.thatcham.org/], the UK vehicle safety testing organisation, said: “If those white lines are not there, your safety system is not going to work. Half the time, they can't work because they can't read the road." The litter, leaves, mud, or surface water that are the reason people on cycles are advised to cycle a metre out from the kerb, also obscure any line markings. As in this image. What world is Matthew Avery living in? It would seem he doesn't cycle.
